concentration.
Alkalosis

sis) A condition of basicity or high pH (above
7.45) of the blood; low hydrogen ion concentration.
Heavy metals
Metals with toxic effects on the body, including arsenic,
mercury, and lead. Iron, also included in this group, is toxic in
high concentrations.
Ionizing radiation
Radiation that causes atoms to ionize; for
example, radioisotope emissions and X rays.
Ketosis
(ke-to

sis) A condition resulting from excessive ketones
(breakdown products of fats) in the blood; common during
starvation and acute attacks of diabetes mellitus.
Radiation sickness
Disease resulting from exposure of the body to
radioactivity; digestive system organs are most affected.
